Truth is Stranger

Curated by Talia Levitt

November 8th – December 20th, 2023

Adler Beatty is pleased to present Truth is Stranger curated by Talia Levitt, a group exhibition that explores current artists' engagement with the art of trompe l’oeil. The exhibition will be on view from November 8th through December 20th at 34 East 69th Street.

Trompe l’oeil is a specific breed of trickery; a mischievous slyness that relates to the slippages of life and the meanings or values of things investigated through semiotics. Irony, redundancy, and multiple meanings are at the heart of this assessment. The artists of this exhibition probe relevant questions of fact vs. fiction and the blurring of meaning that relate to a post-truth cultural landscape.

These artists’ works take ‘meta’ or the self-reflexiveness intrinsic to trompe l’oeil a step deeper by using the potential of alternative materials to oil paint on canvas to either mimic painting itself or poke at the history of still life and artistic replication more broadly.
